Regional nuclear conference

Environmental organisationsZa Matku Zem from Slovakia and Hnutí Duha from the Czech Republic joint-organised a conference with the Energiaklub on June 23, 2010 in Bratislava, Slovakia. The topic was the planned completion and the licensing of blocks 3 and 4 of the Mohi nuclear power plant, and the licensing procedure’s EU context.

As well as experts in the field, representatives of the Slovakian and Austrian environmental organisations also gave lectures at the conference, as did representatives of the Slovakian Ministry of the Environment. Unfortunately, neither the European Commission, nor the proposed builder of the reactors- Slovenské-Elektrarné – ENEL, or the ÚJD, which deals with radioactive waste in Slovakia, accepted the invitation to participate.

The lectures dealt with the economic, security and environmental questions raised by the planned power plant as well as with the licensing procedure, and introduced the Slovakian situation of dealing with radioactive waste. Around 60 people took part in the conference; among them were Slovakian, Czech, Austrian and Hungarian individuals and representatives of different authorities and organisations.

Photosandlecturesfrom the conference can be downloaded from the website of the Za Matku Zem (mostly in Slovakian, only the lectures dealing with the security of the reactorsand waste managementare in English).

The conference was supported by the International Visegrad Fund.
