Check It Out! – Energy at school

15 Hungarian schools participate in the project while at European level more than 100 schools are involved.

Within this project the partners will investigate the energy performance of schools in their country through performing Energy Performance Assestments (EPAs). These EPAs will lead to advices to the schools on how to improve the energy performance. These solutions will be both technical and organisational. Afterwards the partners will support the schools with implementing the advice.

Description:

Sponsor: European Union

Partners: Ecofys Netherlands B.V. (Netherlands), SenterNovem (Netherlands), COS Netherlands (Netherlands), Berliner Energieagentur (Germany), Unabhängiges Institut für Umweltfragen (Germany), Ecofys ES (Spain), Municipality Rousse (Bulgaria)

Type: energy management of public institutions, awareness raising, international co-operation

Aim: Check it Out! is aiming on checking and improving the energy performance of public schools and disseminating the best-practices in order to stimulate more stakeholders to make their buildings energy-efficient.

Target group: municipalities, school directors, teachers, students and their families, maintainers (school janitors, cleaners)

Description: 15 Hungarian schools participate in the project while at European level more than 100 schools are involved.

Besides this technical part, the project partners will also introduce educational programs on the participating schools to inform the pupils and teachers about energy saving and climate change and to get them actively involved in the programme.

Finally this project will lead to a best-practice-model on how to improve the energy performance of schools across Europe. This model has to be disseminated across the European Union.

Planned results:

The direct outcomes of the project are:

  • Cross country analysis of barriers for implementation of energy saving measures and best practice solutions
  • Energy Performance Assessments of more than 100 school buildings
  • A tailored set of measures for each participating school, described in an action plan, which will improve the energy performance of the schools by more than 10%
  • Description of an European Best Practice Support Model for effectively supporting the implementation of energy saving measures in schools buildings
  • Involved pupils in the process of implementing energy saving measures due to an educational programme based on a common educational methodology
  • Dissemination of the project and project results to the local society through the pupils due to the practical elements of the educational programme outside the school
  • Dissemination of the developed support model with good practices to stakeholders to inform and stimulate them to improve their buildings. Over 10.000 schools throughout Europe will be informed.

In the longer term the project Check it out! will contribute to:

  • Catalyse and accelerate an effective implementation of energy saving measures in existing school buildings within the EU resulting in improved energy performance of existing school across the EU
  • Improved comprehension of the potential for energy savings in existing buildings, in general.
