TopHeat - Data-driven protective measures against heat stress
TopHeAT-HU supports communities in the Austrian-Hungarian border region to become more prepared for the increasingly frequent heat waves and rising heat stress in urban areas.
As part of this project, we will examine the direct effects of heat waves in the Austrian-Hungarian border region in two phases: First, we will gain a comprehensive understanding of heat stress by reviewing and analyzing satellite data covering the entire border region. In the second step, detailed, high-resolution heat maps will be created for selected sample areas during the summer months to precisely identify “hot spots” that are more prone to heating-up than their surroundings, resulting in an unfavorable local microclimate.
Based on this, a user-friendly mapping and analysis tools will be developed that enable local governments to identify areas where the heat impact is particularly severe and where (nature-based) measures can be implemented in a targeted manner. In addition, concrete nature-based solutions will be planned and implemented in selected project municipalities, such as small green roofs on public buildings or bus stops, to provide local cooling and improve the quality of the outdoor environment. These measures will be framed by a participatory process that takes into account the interests and needs of the local population. In addition, a free series of events is being organized in which citizens, decision-makers, and experts can participate to exchange knowledge and jointly discuss practical solutions for adapting to increasing heat.
Special attention is also paid to vulnerable social groups, such as preschoolers and the elderly. We are planning a special information and awareness campaign for these target groups to help them cope with the heat in their daily lives and to highlight the importance of protective measures.
Benefits for participating municipalities:
-
Identification of heat-stressed areas within the municipality
-
Support for climate-resilient urban and municipal development
-
Access to new planning tools and expertise
-
Exchange of experiences with local governments in the border region
-
Visible pilot measures to improve quality of life (in a few selected municipalities)
-
Involvement of the public in the planning of local measures
Thus, the project provides concrete and practical support to local governments for measures to adapt to the increased heat stress, as well as helps with implementing solutions exactly where they are most needed.
