"Buy Smart+" - Energy efficient procurement in Europe

Energiaklub participates in a follow-up project that aims to promote green procurement in the EU. Public authorities spend approximately 2 trillion Euro annually, equivalent to about 19% of the EU's gross domestic product. Also private companies have a significant effect on the markets through their procurements. If these procurements take into account environmental criteria (like energy efficiency, life cycle, wastes) this supports the environmental economy, helps conserving the environment and in many cases also saves money for the organisations.

Target group:

Description:

The 2 years long project that started in March 2012 aims at spreading information and know-how on green procurement, especially of energy related products and services. The activities in Hungary are backed by international twinning partners already experienced in green procurement who share their practical experiences, useful pieces of advice and international good practices.  The aim of the project is to assist the spreading of green procurement in Hungary with the help of consultancy, training, sharing good practices, guidelines, life cycle cost calculation methods and by inplementing pilot projects.

Green procurement is a process whereby purchasers seek to procure goods, services and works with a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle when compared with goods, services and works with the same primary function that would otherwise be procured. The target group of the project is thus compiled of professional procurers of public institutions, municipalities on one hand and procurers of private companies on the other hand. Public institutions have a significant influencing role on the market of energy efficient products and services while private companies' activities in green procurement add to their competition in CO2 reduction.

It is ENERGIAKLUB's role in the project to diminish the number of misbeliefs related to green procurement by organising trainings, to serve with consultancy to professional procurers and to prepare different studies and policy papers in the topic of green procurement, focusing on five product groups: lighting, buildings, vehicles, IT and household appliances. Energiaklub will increase information on the topic by presenting good examples, executing three pilot projects and hosting the Hungarian subsite of the Buy Smart webpage. Further more Energiaklub will maintain a customer service for professional purchasers interested in green procurement.
